Frequently asked questions
CRS score, also known as Comprehensive Ranking System is used in Canada in order to evaluate and rank candidates in Express Entry for skilled worker immigration visas. The scores are given and evaluated based on factors such as age, educational qualifications, language proficiency, and work experience.
Once a candidate is in the Express Entry pool, they will then have ample options for raising their CRS score. All factors such as age, educational qualifications, language proficiency, and work experience have an impact on the candidate's CRS scores. Furthermore, candidates can also receive extra points if they have blood relations residing in Canada, have a job offer, are fluent in French, or get nominated through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
A PNP is when a province invites candidates from the Express Entry pool or their own immigration selection system to apply for provincial nomination. Candidates who receive nominations get additional CRS points, increasing their chances of obtaining permanent residence. Once a candidate receives a nomination from a province, they will likely gain 600 points and will ensure getting an invitation to apply (ITA) for PR.
Although the minimum score required is between 300 to 500, it is essential to understand that PNPs have eligibility requirements that are set by each province. To identify the eligible nominees, some of these programmes use the Express Entry system. While these programmes have their own system for points, some provinces may determine whether to invite a candidate to apply for a nomination based on some factors, including CRS score.
CRS score for these applicants are given on their marital status. If the applicants spouse is listed in as non-accompanying on the application or is already a citizen or permanent resident of Canada then the applicant will receive points as a single applicant. If the applicant has an accompanying spouse then the spouse needs to submit Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report or language test result and by doing so the candidate can receive maximum number of points by including their partner in application.
Express Entry draws are held occasionally, for once every two weeks and so a candidate can always try on raising the CRS score before reapplying to Express Entry. There are a number of ways to raise your CRS score and get points for the upcoming draw to receive an ITA in order to apply got a permanent residence in Canada.
Candidates can improve their CRS score by improving the language skills, gaining more work experience, getting LMIA approved work offer, obtaining a higher level of education in Canada, receiving a provincial nomination, or by including your spouse in the application.
All the mentioned factors are crucial in the CRS calculation and scores, having any or all of these will significantly improve your scores. Language tests such as IELTS or CELPIP can help individuals with increasing language proficiency and candidate’s overall ranking. Additionally, candidates with work experience in Canada, and education determined to Canadian standards can all impact the overall score.
