Tips and informations

The three ways a Refugee can privately be sponsored

  1. Group of 5 - any five Canadian citizens or permanent residents who live in the same city and have the financial ability to support the refugee or refugee family for one year. *

  2. Community Sponsor - any registered Canadian organization or business, incorporated or not incorporated, which has the ability to financially support the refugee or refugee family for one year. *

  3. Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) -  SAH is an incorporated organization which has signed a formal agreement with the Government of Canada to allow them to sponsor refugees. #

Notes:

  • *Groups of Five and Community Sponsors are only permitted to sponsor refugees who have been formally recognized as refugees by either the UNHCR, or by the local government.

  • #SAH can sponsor individuals who are in a "refugee-like situation"

  • A refugee can not be privately sponsored to Canada by one person unless he found a community of SAH to co-sign.

  • There are two more ways to sponsor refugees:

  1.  Blended Visa Office-Referred (BVOR) Program and

  2. Joint Assistance Sponsorship (JAS) Program.  To read more about these, click here.

Please note: Selamta Immigration Services is NOT able to find you a person or group of people in Canada for sponsorship.

  • Organizations who have signed sponsorship agreements with the Government of Canada to help support refugees from abroad when they resettle in Canada.

  • They can sponsor refugees themselves or work with others in the community to sponsor refugees.

  • Most Sponsorship Agreement Holders are religious, ethnic, community, or service organizations.
